At yesterday's Illustration Friday at GAC, a young man was compelled to illustrate an iconic Texas landscape scene when prompted by the word "Home."

A self-professed "non-artist," he told us he came to Illustration Friday at GAC because he was visiting town for just two days, and it was raining, and it seemed like a good "rainy day" thing to do.


Indeed it is!  Rainy day, Friday...it's really just about picking a day and letting yourself go with some basic art supplies.
Another self-professed "non-artist" pulled this profound image right from her imagination. What a lovely way to interpret the word "home." Perhaps it had to do with the fact that she was on her way home this weekend, to a country half-way around the world!

Illustration Friday happens every first and third Friday at Galveston Arts Center.  Drop in between 4:00 and 6:00 and bring your creative license.  No charge/materials provided.

Light

This 6-year-old got right down to business during Illustration Friday at GAC yesterday.  We were a little surprised that the old incandescents are still the first thing that came to this young mind in response to the word "Light."

In a whimsical turn of events, however, the rest of the session was given over to spontaneous creation of paper snowflakes, inspired by the seasonal window treatments now decorating our ArtWorks museum store.

As the early visitors to Dickens on The Strand began walking by the windows in Victorian costume, tiny bits of paper (or "schnibbles" as they're called in some German families) happily flew everywhere, creating a miniature snowstorm in one corner the gallery.

It just goes to show how the simple invitation to explore our creativity can lead just about anywhere...

Trouble

Illustration Friday got a little surreal at GAC today.  The topic word was "Trouble" and our casual artists were ready! 

Who's actually in trouble here?  This cat might have just made the most interesting zoological discovery of the year! 

Halloween is nearly upon us, and this Frankenstein monster seems to have found himself in something of a pickle.  Maybe the minotaur can help him find his way out?

Trouble of the everyday sort...or is it?  This young artist insisted that she never actually finds herself in this situation.

And then things started to get real:

Sometimes robots just get in trouble for jamming too much. Or did he pull the cord? Bad robot!

The dog did it, I swear!

First Illustration Friday at GAC

The first I.F. was a blast!  The topic was "Novelty" and everyone interpreted it in his or her own unique way.  We had a great group of people--all with ties to UTMB.

Common ground was discovered over nibbles and refreshments and plenty of art supplies.  Everyone there said they had not drawn or painted in a long time and really needed the chance to get the creative juices going.                               Illustration Friday: it's good and good for you!

The first Illustration Friday at Galveston Arts Center will be on September 19th from 4:00-6:00 PM.  Bring a sketchbook, or don't!  We have space, supplies, creative staff and funky tunes.
